Assistive Technology Resources
Assistive Technology Resources. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 defines assistive technology device as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability" (IDEA, 1997, 20, USC, Ch. 33, Sec. 1401 [25] US).
For information and more assistive technology resources to meet the needs of students in Grades K-12 click here. Below is a list of assistive technology resources, including links to learn more on augmentative and alternative communication. The Family Guide to Assistive Technology is a free comprehensive guide for families who wish to learn more about assistive technology. AbleData is an excellent source of assistive technology resources and information. The Alliance for Technology Access or ATA is a network of community-based Resource Centers, Developers, Vendors and Associates dedicated to providing information and support services to children and adults with disabilities, and increasing their use of standard, assistive, and information technologies. ATA Members can be found all across the country. National Organization Caring for Kids works to provide augmentative and alternative communications (AAC) devices, which are a class of electronic devices and software that serve as a substitute for the human voice, for those who do not qualify or who do not have access to funding sources for AAC. Augmentative and Alternative CommunicationDid you know...?
Eight in 1000 or over two million Americans have a severe speech disability. Yet only five percent use an augmentative and alternative communication device to help them communicate. The Communication Aid Manufacturers Association or CAMA is a nonprofit organization of top manufacturers of augmentative and alternative communication software/hardware, assistive technology resources, providing links and listing of regional workshops.
The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Communication Enhancement or RERC is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Their goal is to improve technologies that further the development of communication, language, natural speech, discourse skills, and literacy of persons with significant communication disorders.
United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication or USSAAC is the only national association specially designed to address the needs of persons who are either severely speech impaired or unable to speak. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to methods of communication that enhance (augment) or replace (alternative) conventional forms of expression.
International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication or ISAAC has chapters in 15 countries promoting the best possible communication for people with complex communication needs.
