DSM Redefining Asperger's Syndrome

Recently, there was an article in the Pekin Daily Times, Illinois, by Daniel Vance, Syndicated columnist titled: DISABILITIES Asperger's syndrome being redefined.

It noted comments by Dr. Diane Twachtman-Cullen of Autism Spectrum Quarterly. It also mentioned that the next edition of the DSM to be released in 2013 is planning to lump Asperger's in with Autism as just one diagnosis. It did note that Vance was opposed to the revision.

I would like to know how other people feel about this and see if anyone else would like to share their thoughts with the creators of the DSM. I know I would.

I personally feel that Asperger's and Autism should be considered two separate diagnoses on separate spectrums. While the two may share some qualities, I feel they are different enough to be separated. I believe the DSM should list A.S. separately and that the description and questions used to diagnose A.S. should be revised to suit Asperger's as a separate diagnosis.

Please let me know if anyone knows how to get messages through to the people in charge of the DSM (who ultimately help decide the fate of our children by aiding or harming their chances of a proper diagnosis, which affects treatment options and services).

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback regarding this issue.
