Give Him A Voice

by Hannah
(Wyoming )

When I was young I didn't ever understand

How come he would always shake his hand
He never spoke, and I didn't know why
That always made me cry
Kids would laugh at him and call him a "retard"
Then shun him away like he was just easy to discard

If I could give him a voice then all could see
Just how amazing my brother could be.
I would give him mine if I had the choice
To give him time to laugh and rejoice

I would get laughed at because he always screamed
But to think everyone did it, even you and me
He shakes his hands and tries to mumble out words
But strangers shake their heads and say that this is absurd.

But to think he laughs and smiles to get through the day
He ignores the fact that people judge him on the way he looks and weighs.

If I could give him a voice then all could see
Just how amazing my brother could be
I would give him mine if I had the choice
To give him time to laugh and rejoice

Cody's laugh and childlike innocence
Can go from very eager to downright reluctant.
But how he looks out on life as a gift
Is better than some adults
But sometimes he needs a lift.
