Hero Defined

by Gerard Sentochnik
(Islip, NY)

The day I became a father
Was a day I'll never forget
My beautiful black-haired boy
What a day... the day we met.

God dealt him a very bad hand
Something I will never understand
Broke our hearts but starting to mend
Hearts don't break they just bend

What is a hero to you, I ask?
A very strong man in a Spiderman mask?
No not true, it's this little kid
Never complains about what God did

Accepts things as they are
And he has come so far
A hero to him I thought I'd be
But he is the hero to me.
