A Need To Work At Home
Do you need to work at home? Let’s face it. Many mothers of children with autism need to work-at-home to care for their autistic child, supervise a home-based educational program, as well as look after and provide for their famiy.
The first time that small, yellow school bus pulled into our driveway I was overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow. It broke my heart for our youngest child and only son to have a need to ride it. The trip to preschool was 35 miles each way. Much too long for such a young child, a toddler really, who could not speak or interact with others.
Still, there was a sense of hope and promise for him to learn the things we were able to teach his sisters and yet unable to teach him. Like how to talk, become toilet trained, and learn all the natural lessons which would allow him to “catch-up” to other children his same age.
At night while at work, I'd call home. Each time I'd get the same report. Our son was cranky, screaming, and behaving oddly. He was unable to go to sleep, or he was unable to stay asleep. And he began to wander around the house late at night. Our daughters found it harder and harder to study, and get enough sleep for school the next day.
My husband’s job was far away from home with rotating tours and mandatory overtime. Both our jobs did not provide workplace benefits for children of special needs. Before long I would need to resign. There would be three other jobs for me.
Various bouts of illness, medical appointments, therapy sessions, and special education meetings did not meet my work schedule. Noticing how stressed out and chaotic our family's home life had become, our daughter approached me and asked "Mom, can you work at home?" I decided then to look into this idea.
After spending a lot of time and small fortune on trying to find genuine work at home, looking for work-at-home opportunities online, buying deceiving e-Books, and useless job directories, I gave up. Get rich quick schemes or boring jobs like stuffing envelopes were all that were available.
